Wellington Drain Clearing Projects
Every blocked drain has a cause. At Superdrains, we use specialist equipment and practical experience to identify drainage problems and provide lasting solutions. Here are two real projects from across the Wellington region, showing how we investigated the issues, carried out the necessary repairs, and got the drainage systems flowing properly again.
Root Intrusion & Waste Pipe Replacement – Wellington
The Problem
We were called to investigate a serious problem with a property’s waste/sewage pipe. The initial symptoms indicated a major blockage somewhere in the drainage system, so we attended with the specialist equipment needed to locate and diagnose the problem.
Using a drain inspection camera capable of travelling inside the pipework, we were able to investigate the drainage system and identify the cause of the blockage.
The inspection revealed that tree roots had entered the pipework, causing a significant obstruction. While some of the roots could be removed initially, this was only a temporary solution. To permanently resolve the problem, we needed to locate the point where the roots had entered the pipe and repair the damaged section.
Digging Down to the Source
Finding the damaged section proved to be a much bigger job than initially expected. The excavation continued deeper and deeper until we eventually reached approximately 2 metres below ground level, all the way down to the council main drain.
We worked through the excavation, using machinery where possible to make the demanding work more efficient while carefully exposing the affected drainage pipe.
Once the damaged section was located, we removed the roots and repaired the affected pipework. Several metres of the existing pipe were replaced, providing a long-term solution rather than simply clearing the blockage again.
Completing the Job
As part of the repair, we also installed new inspection points, providing better access to the drainage system for future maintenance and inspections.
With the drainage repairs completed, we carefully backfilled the excavation. All of the excavated earth was returned to the trench and compacted as the ground was reinstated. The area was then levelled and grass seed was sown over the repaired section, leaving the property tidy and ready to recover.
The Result
What began as a blocked waste/sewage pipe turned out to be a significant underground drainage problem caused by root intrusion and damaged pipework.
By using CCTV inspection to identify the problem and then excavating to the source, we were able to remove the roots, replace the damaged pipework and install new inspection points, providing a much more permanent solution.
This project demonstrates why simply clearing a blocked drain is not always enough. When roots have entered damaged pipework, locating and repairing the underlying problem can prevent the blockage from continually returning.
Superdrains provides professional drain clearing, CCTV drain inspections, root removal and drainage repairs throughout Wellington, Porirua, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and the Kapiti Coast.

Overflowing Sewer Drain & Damaged Pipes – Lower Hutt
The Problem
We were contacted about an overflowing sewer drain at a property in Lower Hutt. This was actually the second time we had been called to help with a blocked sewer drain at the property, so it was important to not only clear the immediate blockage but also identify what was causing the problem.
We attended the same morning and began investigating the overflowing sewerage. After assessing the situation, it became clear that the problem required excavation to locate the affected pipework and determine the underlying cause.
Finding the Cause
Excavating around a sewer line is never a particularly pleasant job, especially when dealing with raw sewerage, but we got straight into the work and carefully exposed the drainage system.
We eventually discovered that two sewer pipes had been damaged by a retaining wall post installed as part of construction on the neighbouring property. The damage had affected the pipes and was contributing to the drainage problems and overflowing sewer.
Once the cause had been established, we explained the situation to the neighbouring property owners and showed them what had happened. After understanding the cause of the damage, they accepted responsibility for the repairs and agreed to cover the resulting invoice.
The Repair
We repaired the damaged pipework and cleared and flushed the sewer drain to restore proper flow through the system.
We also discussed some possible future improvements with the property owner that could make any future drainage problems easier to deal with. One option discussed was rerouting a stormwater drain that currently passes through the neighbouring property, potentially giving the property owner better control and access to their drainage infrastructure in the future.
The Result
The damaged sewer pipes were repaired and the overflowing sewer drain was cleared and flushed, restoring the drainage system to proper operation.
Because we took the time to excavate and identify the actual cause of the problem, the repair addressed the underlying pipe damage rather than simply treating the blockage as a temporary issue.
We also provided practical advice about possible future drainage improvements, giving the property owner options for making the system easier to maintain and access.
A Practical Approach to Drainage Problems
This project is a good example of why a recurring or serious sewer blockage may require more than simply flushing the drain. In this case, excavation was necessary to locate the damaged pipes and establish exactly what had caused the problem.
At Superdrains, we aim to diagnose the cause of drainage problems, explain what we find and provide practical repair options so our customers can make informed decisions about their property.
